When a party changes the club

Bathhouses have always had busy nights:

  • Fridays and Saturdays
  • Leather Nights or other Theme Nights
  • Weeknights with a half-price special
  • That unusual Monday evening when Mercury is in the House of the Unicorn and the whole town is horny at the same time

And for a few years now, another night has been drawing large crowds to gay bathhouses around the world: CumUnion.

You may have seen the name on the apps, sites like Sniffies, gay calendars, and even queer newspapers (yes! they still exist!) and wondered, “What in the world is CumUnion?”

So… What’s CumUnion?

In their own words, “CumUnion is an International Sex party open to gay and bi-sexual men.”

My take? CumUnion is a branded, recognizable sex party hosted at gay bathhouses and sex clubs throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Europe, and Australia — and honestly, probably coming soon to a club near you.

Their goal is pretty clear: Dedicate one night to a sex-positive, body-positive atmosphere, where each person chooses what acts they’re comfortable with, and everyone is welcome to engage as they see fit.

  • Want only bareback encounters? Go for it!
  • Want to bring your pup on his leash, hooded and caged? Bold move, and have fun!
  • Are you a smooth twink looking for the beefy, hairy guys? You’re in luck: They’ll be there!
  • Looking to rapidly increase your body count? CumUnion’s a good place to do it!

A quick history lesson

The CumUnion site tells us that they

started as a small sex party after the 2010 Dore Alley Street Fair in San Francisco. The success of the first party spawned the second, held two months later following Folsom Street Fair. Due to the overwhelming popularity of these two events we began to have the party on a regular basis. It wasn’t long before word spread and guys started to request that a CumUnion party be held in their city.

There’s also an echo of a similarly themed and named party at Lab.oratory, the infamous fetish and sex club in Berlin, dating back to the early 2000s.

That’s typical of queer culture: ideas spark in multiple places, sometimes independently, sometimes influenced by each other, and often without anyone worrying too much about who was “first.”

Auntie’s history with CumUnion

CumUnion arrived at my “home club,” Club Philly, a few years after it developed in San Francisco. I actually went to the very first one that they held, curious to see what it would be like. I quickly became a regular because I liked the vibe and always had a lot of fun.

In 2020, just like everything else, bathhouse culture and CumUnion came to a crashing stop during the pandemic shutdown. To their credit, CumUnion and their sponsors raised money to distribute among their participating bathhouses and clubs, hoping to ease the burden of nonexistent revenues. Auntie remembers receiving a couple emails encouraging private donations.

Once the pandemic restrictions reduced to allow businesses to open, CumUnion also came back — with facemasks, temperature checks, and hand sanitizer. CumUnion has always encouraged each participant’s health and safety, and that was on full display during those “come back cautiously and wisely” days.

And Auntie was right there… hanging out at my favorite gloryhole in the basement slurp ramp on that first night back at Club Philly for CumUnion.

Since then, CumUnion (and Club Philly) resurged quickly:

  • The parties are now held twice each month (on the first and third Saturday nights)
  • The crowds have grown so much that rooms always sell out early, and lockers sell out on particularly busy nights.

CumUnion is definitely the busiest time at Club Philly — and you can almost always find Auntie there.

What CumUnion changes

Traditional bathhouse visits are wonderfully unpredictable:

  • Some nights are packed
  • Some are quiet
  • Some nights you find exactly what you’re looking for
  • Some nights you mostly enjoy the steam room and head home early

CumUnion changes that rhythm: When it’s on the calendar, people aren’t just deciding whether to visit the bathhouse. They’re deciding whether to attend an event.

That may sound like a small difference. It isn’t.

Why it works

Auntie suspects that there are several reasons.

It removes decision fatigue

Instead of asking: “Should I go to the baths tonight?”

People ask: “Is tonight CumUnion?”

That’s a much easier decision.

It creates a crowd

Nobody wants to be the only person wandering around an empty maze at 1 AM.

CumUnion signals: People will be there.

That matters.

It creates shared expectations

On an ordinary bathhouse night:

  • One person might want to relax
  • Another wants a private room
  • Another wants to cruise slowly
  • Another wants to get railed by six tops before midnight

CumUnion helps to align expectations before people even arrive — but shared expectations never replace etiquette, clear signals, and enthusiastic consent.

That creates momentum.

What CumUnion can do for first-timers

This may surprise you, but CumUnion may actually make bathhouses easier for some newcomers:

  • The energy is obvious and everywhere
  • They don’t need to wonder if anything is happening at the club that night
  • They don’t need to try to decode whether the crowd is shy, tired, curious, or just there for the sauna

On CumUnion nights, the answer is usually:

Yes.

Are there any downsides?

Probably:

  • Some regulars prefer quieter nights
  • Some people still prefer the slower rhythm of cruising in a bathhouse:
    • Slow walks through the space
    • Long eye contact
    • Whispered conversations
    • And the delicious uncertainty of traditional bathhouse culture

CumUnion usually feels more intense than that:

  • Bigger crowd
  • More direct
  • More potential contact and encounters
  • More… efficiency

That’s neither good nor bad. It’s different.

And bathhouses need both quiet nights and the high-energy, efficient nights. Because different customers like each. And some of us are looking for one or the other, depending on our mood.

Auntie says…

CumUnion doesn’t change what happens at a bathhouse. Bathhouses were already designed to encourage sexually charged encounters between consenting adults.

What CumUnion changes is how people decide when to go.

In today’s world of apps, streaming, home hookups, and countless digital distractions competing for our attention…

That matters.

CumUnion doesn’t change what happens at the bathhouse. It changes how — and when — and how many people show up for it.
